The report provides analysis of benefits we’ve seen in the state as a direct result of EmPOWER Maryland programs, illustrated through case studies. It also makes recommendations on how state regulators and utilities should strengthen efforts to meet the EmPOWER Maryland goals so we can reap even more benefits like lower electric bills and local clean energy jobs.

BACKGROUND:
Energy efficiency lowers bills, makes our electric grid more reliable, and protects the environment. Recognizing these benefits, Maryland adopted the EmPOWER Maryland Act in 2008 which set a goal of reducing statewide per-capita electricity consumption and peak demand by 15 percent by 2015. Utility companies are responsible for 10 percent of the savings, with federal and state programs providing the other 5 percent.

Maryland PIRG Foundation’s report provides up-to-date analysis of the benefits seen from progress toward EmPOWER goals in terms of jobs created, money saved on consumers’ energy bills, and avoided costs because of reduced need for generation and transmission lines.
